How do you find a GP?

11 Nov 2025

Are you looking for a general practitioner? Here you can read how to choose a GP and what to do if you are having difficulty finding one.

Your regular GP

Most people in the Netherlands have a regular GP. Sometimes a GP works alone, sometimes in a practice with several GPs. You are not obliged to register with a GP, but it is advisable.

 A regular GP:

  • Knows your personal situation and notices changes in your health.
  • Knows where to refer you for health problems.
  • Ensures that you can also get help outside office hours via the GP emergency service (evenings, nights, weekends, public holidays).

Choosing yourself

You are free to choose which GP you register with. This is called free choice of doctor. However, it is sometimes not possible to register with the GP of your choice. This can happen, for example, if:

  • The GP is not accepting new patients.
  • You live too far away from the practice.
  • You and the GP have different ideas about care (for example, about alternative treatments or euthanasia).

How do you find a GP?

Most neighbourhoods have one or more GP practices. You can find them online by searching for “GP” and your place of residence. Or you can use the interactive map showing all GP practices in the Arnhem-Zevenaar region. Contact the GP practice to see if they are accepting new patients. You can also ask your health insurer to help you find an available practice.

Do you need urgent medical assistance?

If you do not yet have a GP and require urgent medical assistance, please call the GP emergency service (outside office hours) or 112 in case of life-threatening situations.
